That should clean up rather quickly.

Heaps of spares eh? At the asking price this could be well worth a look.

    Thanks Max.

Hey Guys, I bought this bike - then ended up here to have a nosy and saw the discussion about it... Thought that's it - I have to join now! There was heaps of spares - spare tank, carbs etc. Seller was a really nice guy too - Kiwi of course. Very happy and have started the rebuild, have the engine out to get soda blasted - waiting for some ordered parts...etc etc. Nice to join you guys, hope I can contribute also.

    Cheers,
    Ben

Hi Ben and welcome to the Forum, glad to have another Kat owner on board. What are your plans for the Kat, restomod, custom, stock, as is? Have sent you a P.M., click on "Notification" in the top right corner of Forum page to read it. Looking forward to seeing and hearing about your project Kat and seeing her out and about once it's finished.

    Cheers,
    Glen.

    Thanks Glen,
I grew up in Wellington NZ. When I was about 12-13 we used to go and watch Robert Holden, Dave Hiscok et al racing at Gracefield street circuit. My best mates older brother and uncle had a GSX250 & GSX750 respectively and we loved bikes. We used to go down to the local dealer in '82-'83 and (god knows why) they used to let us kids sit on the silver Katanas, brand new at the time. My whole life since, that bike (especially the 1100) has always been my dream bike. The incredible style, textured seat, engineering, art power and beauty. I've had quite a few bikes - Intruder, GSX750F, Ninja, even had a pop up katana for a while when I was about 18 or 19 but never the original silver Kat. That changed last week when by chance I saw the word 'Katana' jump out of a Facebook ad that said "garage sale". One thing led to another and here I am! finally the dream came true. The bike has been painted black - registered, good nick, little bit of an oil leak, that's about it. But my dream has always been that original bike that I sat on all those years ago - has to be silver, has to have the textured seat So resto with a bit of mod is the plan, will prob keep custom exhaust and a few other items - it has polished hyabusa clutch and brake etc. which look pretty good. So I;m going for the orginal look, but I'm not too militant about it.

I'll be doing all the work and painting myself, I'm fairly handy with this kind of stuff so willing to have a go! Progress so far:

Hi Ben, thanks for your intro and how after all these years you have nabbed your 'Dream Bike". I know what you mean, when I saw my first 1100 Kat in 1981 I knew that I had to have one and grabbed one then. Still own and ride a Kat, just not the first 1981 1100.

Thought there was a Kiwi connection there after reading your "good bloke" line about the seller.

You mentioned the wheels had been swapped. You are on the money there, your Kat is an SZ and at some stage a set of SD/SE wheels have been fitted. Some like the SD/SE profile and they are a good look if you want a change from the snowflake wheels that Suzuki fitted to almost every bike they made in the early to mid eighties. Thanks for the pics, she looks to be in overall good shape with all the main bits still there.

If you are looking for a fine silver metallic there are a few options that are close to the Kat 13L silver. PPG used to have 13L recipe on their database however, I don't know if they still list 13L, been a few years since I used it. I have a Mitsubishi metallic code that is a very close match to 13L if you want to try it.

Keep up the posts and pics.

    Cheers,
    Glen.

Hey Ben, welcome and glad to have you aboard! You'll have to start a restoration thread so we can all follow along too.

For the 13L, PPG most definitely still have it. I used it so I could have the silver bits of mine the correct silver. It's not the cheapest given it's available in their top of the line brand only (Deltron) but it's nice paint to work with and was easy to spray (for an amateur like me anyway!).

I personally reckon the SD wheels are the best of the cast designs but I'm 100% biased, and good to see you scored the Ventura L brackets there too, very handy for things like the State of Origin get together!
    1984 Katana 7/11 - done at last!

    1982 GS450E - not quite stock

Preservation before restoration - they are only original once
