Must have dropped a couple of nuts and bolts into the cylinders during last head gasket replacement

Must be another one of those "like it's straight out of the crate" bikes.

I had a '74 Kwaka S3 400 Triple that sounded a bit like that there RG, It sounded like a epileptic was tin half full of ball bearings when you blipped the throttle.

Then again that was mainly fin rattle (it had a shit load of fins and I don't remember any fin rubbers on it), ...and exhaust pipe rattle, ...and kick-start rattle, ...and clutch lever rattle ...and brake lever rattle, all aided and abetted by a very uneven idle.

The 3 carbs were individually mounted on rubber boots with separate throttle cables and the engine was solidly mounted. The carbs would rotate on their boots from the engine vibration and end up at different angles to each other, with none of them vertical. When you synchronized the carbs they would stay synched for about 15 seconds. So she'd run perfect for the length of the driveway. Three sets of points (remember them?) to set, file because they would get burnt, reset, and then replace. It ate sparkplugs and consumed fuel at an alarming rate, a full tank got you about 110 Km and it was easily blown away by RD400s.

God I wish I still had it.

It was fettler's delight. The S3 is probably rarer than the better known H1-500 and the H2-750. The S3 lasted two years 74 and 75, then became the KH400 for 76 and 77. A fully restored one came up for sale here recently and sold for silly money. Ah two-strokes... I cut my teeth on them. I counted up and I've owned 9 of them over the years. Three off-roaders and 6 road bikes.

Lots of fiddling about tuning as you mentioned Darryl....great fun to ride when sorted.

This one wasn't popular with old mate next door  , so out it went to make room for the katatooye.

Very, very nice attention to detail and rebuild.
But an even better up-grade!
( and the fins & discs are the correct way round )
