Hi all, obviously site is under spam attack.

I know Shane and Frankie will be all over it but would like to make a suggestion.

When people are registering to join the forum they only have access to the Introduction thread and also must make a one off donation of $5 which then must be verified by an Admin before further access to site is allowed.

From what I am lead to believe no spammer would go further once they had to make a financial contribution themselves.

- I hear people say " what if person doesn't have internet banking or credit card !! ", fair call, a friend or younger relative might be able to help out perhaps.
- Personal recommendation from a current bona fide member would count highly.
- If all else fails stick 5 dollars or equivalent in an envelope and send to a PO Box ( I have one ).

While making a financial contribution up front is not ideal it could weed out the undesirable elements that get their kicks from posting crap all over the place.
The amount, $5, isn't going to break anyones bank and if the person joins the forum then decides it is not for them, well so long-all the best.

Just my ideas guys, anyone else have something ?

Cheers

Agree we need to do something Eric but, I'm not sure this will work because the access comes from the users other activity which provides a path to us. First thing I'd do is turn off the stayed logged in function and remember my password, that way a hacker can't enter through an open channel. Then I'd probably enforce a password change on a cyclical basis to protect from compromise of a member's account based on someone hacking their personal computer. Those two things are pretty basic IT control.

Yep, good idea Paul. I don't much about the Interweb and all its trickery but guess there must be ways of combating these low IQ sloping forehead types :)

The register has been closed to all new members wishing to join for a while, untill these idiots get bored. Then I will screen each new membership before they can join.

As for the fee idea, I will leave that to you to decide as this is your site too.

Thanks Shane, I can imagine all this does is use up valuable time of yours that could best be spent on Katana or family related things instead...
